Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Love Over Money

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational videos, stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today's quote comes to us from Walt Disney himself!

"Disneyland is a work of love. We didn't go into Disneyland just with the idea of making money."

- Walt Disney

This is a very inspirational quote to me because it shows the roots of the Disney Company. It just goes to show you that you have to love what you do in order to be successful. I think that life is too short to spend one minute doing something you hate. I spent most of my 20's doing just that. I went from job to job feeling like the one I really wanted was not out there. I worked with horrible people who were miserable so they made me miserable. It is only now that I have the job that I want that I can see how much better my life is. I'm like a different person! My life is definitely better now that I spend every day doing what I love.

Disney Fairytale Wedding & Honeymoon Day 8: WDW's 40th Anniversary

We woke up early and hightailed it to the Magic Kingdom for the 40th anniversary! Unfortunately there was a bus accident at Saratoga Springs, so we took a cab to the Transportation & Ticket Center instead. We took the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom. It was a madhouse!! We were lucky enough to get a spot right at the turnstiles.

mk 40th anniversary

Then the opening show started! I had never actually seen it in person but of course I've watched it on YouTube a million times so I know the script. Needless to say, I cried nearly the entire time. It was just so magical! Here's a full video by UndercoverTourist!

After the show, the park was officially open and we were herded to Main Street. We picked up our special 40th Anniversary buttons and maps on the way!

mk map

We saw people jacking handfuls of maps and buttons but that was stopped quickly. I can't remember how many times I heard Castmembers say "One per person". As we walked up Main Street, I checked Ebay to see what the maps and buttons were going for. $35 for the set. Ridiculous!!

mk 40th

We walked up Main Street and grabbed popcorn and a coke for breakfast (only on vacation!!). We found a pretty good spot for the dedication ceremony at the Castle. I'm pretty short so I had to look through people's heads but my camera had a good view!

mk castle

I can't begin to tell you how awesome it was to be at the Magic Kingdom in person on the 40th Anniversary. The Disney Geeks came out in droves and we met so many awesome people that day. While we waited for the ceremony, we talked to a lady wearing an AllEars.net hat. I saw people wearing shirts from other well known Disney sites but it was so crowded I couldn't talk to everybody!

Then the show started. I have to tell you, I cried nearly the entire time!! The Main Street Philhamonic and Dapper Dans were very moving. But, near the end, there was a crowd sing along to When You Wish Upon A Star. I still can't believe I was there! It was amazing. Here's a video of the entire show by InsideTheMagic! Enjoy :)

After the ceremony, we met up with Lou Mongello & his crew from WDWRadio by the castle. He interviewed me about the carrot cake cookie vs butterfinger cupcake! I do love both but my heart lies with the carrot cake cookie. I just love the atmosphere of The Writers' Stop.

Lou Mongello

Lou and his crew were so sweet and they congratulated us on the wedding. We said goodbye to them but we planned to see them again at other meets later that day and over the weekend. We turned around and there were Jess and her Mom again!! It was too funny to see them unplanned like that. We had been tweeting that morning but I knew a ton of people who were there and I never saw them! It's pretty funny to bump into someone you know randomly in the parks and it happened twice to us on this trip!

The herd was heading toward Fantasyland and Tomorrowland so we went to Adventureland.  We wanted to ride Pirates of the Caribbean but the line looked pretty long. We're so spoiled since we usually visit during off peak times, we never want to wait more than 15 minutes for a ride. Instead, we decided to eat at the new Tortuga Tavern. I'm trying to branch out from chicken strips and burgers so I got the nachos. Yum!! I would definitely eat there again.

tortuga tavern nachos

Since the park was a madhouse, we decided to just take it easy and shop on Main Street. We stopped by Crystal Arts and I bought engraved mugs for us and our good friends who just got married this year. I had them engraved with our wedding dates :) Plus as an extra bonus, Crystal Arts will ship your order home for free! I was so happy and I will cherish those mugs forever. Not only are they from our wedding, but I bought them in the Magic Kingdom on the 40th Anniversary.

crystal arts

We loved watching them make the glass and crystal pieces! But don't stare into the fire too long, I was a bit blurry eyed afterwards!

crystal arts

We shopped a bit more on Main Street. I'm always looking for the special phone that you can pick up and hear a funny story and I can never find it! We stopped at a bunch of phones but never found it.

magic kingdom phone

October 1st is also my Mom's birthday so I had to take a break at our favorite white and yellow tables on Main Street to call and wish her a Happy Birthday! As we were talking, the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade went by so she got an extra special birthday present!

After the parade, we made our way to Swan Boat Landing for the WDWRadio 40th Anniversary Meet. I can't wait to move to Orlando so we can do this every month! We had so much fun talking to everyone I've met on forums, twitter, and the WDWRadio chat.

lou mongello

I love meeting other Disney fans. I feel like my entire life people at home have thought I'm a bit weird because I have such a huge fixation on Disney and especially Walt Disney World. It really helps to know that I'm not alone!!

lou mongello

We also got to meet Amy Petermann from TheRelocatedTourist.com. I found her blog over the summer by searching google for relocation information. Low and behold, I found a blog about a family who relocated to Orlando because of their love of Disney and it's chock full of great emotional and financial information!! Plus she's a WDWRadio fan?? I HAD to meet her!

amy petermann

We met so many new friends at the meet and I cannot wait to see them again in the future. There were so many people there! I highly suggest these meets for any Disney fan.

wdw radio meet

After the excitement of the meet, we decided to start making our way back to the hotel for some naps. I wanted to see if they had any of the special 40th Anniversary cupcakes left at the Main Street Bakery but they were all gone. Jason got a turkey sandwich and I opted for a croissant...and an eclair! Hey, I was on vacation ;)

main street bakery

It was nice, we got to watch the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade while we sat and ate. After we were finished, we ran into Jess and her Mom again!!! Too bad we were getting ready to leave or we would have hung out with them a bit longer.

mickey pumpkin magic kingdom

We were making our way out but I wanted to make one more stop at Casey's for some corn dog nuggets and cheese sauce. I hadn't had that in years and I was having a craving! Yum! I didn't get a picture because they were too delicious and I had cheese sauce all over my hands. It was a perfect moment, standing on Main Street eating corn dog nuggets and drinking an ice cold coke with my Husband on our Disneymoon on the 40th Anniversary. Finally it was time to go back to Saratoga Springs for naps.

After the excitement of the day, we ended up staying in that night. We had a LOT to pack, some boxes to ship home, organizing to do, etc. The next day we would be checking out early AM and our flight home wasn't until 8PM so we needed to be fully charged. We had one last dinner at The Artist's Palette and watched a bit of Hocus Pocus on the big screen by the pool. We were very excited for the next day because we had 3 more meets planned and one that I had planned myself!

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational videos, stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today's video features the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights by WDWMagic, enjoy!

I have not seen the Osborne lights in person since 1999. I am SO amazed at how much they have changed and improved it to make a full show! Back in 1999 they were just lights. Now it's choreographed to music and it's absolutely breathtaking! I cannot wait to see it in person next year when we'll be Florida residents!!

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Speech 2005

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational videos, stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today I want to share with you a video of Steve Jobs' Commencement Speech at Stanford in 2005. This video is a little over 14 minutes but I highly suggest you watch and take in the whole thing.

I am not one of those people who look at it as Apple vs. Microsoft. I am a Microsoft developer (by day) but I love Apple too. When Steve Jobs passed away recently, it brought a tear to my eye. I studied Computer Science in college and I wrote many papers about Steve Jobs and Apple. He has inspired me to pursue a career in technology, an industry that is not chosen by many women.

I have watched this video in the past and it came up in my search for inspirational videos. I knew immediately that I had to post it. Steve Jobs was not only an inspiration in the technology industry, he also had a hand Disney and Pixar as well. When he died, people began comparing him to Walt Disney himself. I can see the comparison. They both created something that has a huge fan base and they both died too early in life.

The part in this video where Steve talks about how he had just beaten cancer made me cry tears of unbelievable sadness. He talks about how that was the closest he has come to facing death and he hopes to be around for decades to come. He only lived for 6 years after that speech. Rest In Peace, Steve.

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Poohsticks

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational videos, stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

My posts have been pretty emotional this week so I wanted to lighten it up today with some warm fuzzies from Winnie The Pooh :)

pooh sticks

Please enjoy this excerpt from The House at Pooh Corner!

Then he dropped two in at once, and leant over the bridge to see which of them would come out first; and one of them did; but as they were both the same size, he didn't know if it was the one which he wanted to win, or the other one. So the next time he dropped one big one and one little one, and the big one came out first, which was what he had said it would do, and the little one came out last, which was what he had said it would do, so he had won twice.† And that was the beginning of the game called Poohsticks.

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Reflections

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational videos, stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today's quote comes to us from the most fierce warrior princess, Mulan!

mulan reflection"Why is my reflection someone I don't know?"

- Mulan, Mulan

Hearing this song always makes me cry and I cannot tell you how many times I have looked in the mirror and I did not like what I saw. It wasn't about my outer appearance either. It was about who I was inside, I wasn't making the right choices and I did not treat people the way I was taught. I was lost and confused but my recent trips to Walt Disney World really helped me to improve myself. Now when I look in the mirror, I see someone that I do know. Someone who has always been there but was just lost for a little while. :)

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Finding the Balance

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational videos, stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

princess tiana disneyToday I have an assignment. Over the past few weeks since the wedding, I have been writing a lot about inspiration and I have been working myself too hard to achieve my goals. Like so many people, I tend to fall into the pit of putting people and work before myself. So, today I am going to do something to pamper myself and I want you to do the same! A bubble bath, buying something special, a hair appointment, a favorite wine (Rosa Regale!!!) or a favorite activity. We all have to remember to maintain a reasonable balance in the midst of all of the chaos that is daily life.

I was really inspired by the movie The Princess and the Frog because Tiana and Naveen really were the perfect match. They remind me a lot of myself and Jason. I am a big workaholic like Tiana and Jason is more laid back like Naveen. It is wonderful to have goals and aspirations but you have to remember to take a break once in awhile!

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Obscurity

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today I have an inspirational video for you from Heather Traska of YouTube fame! This video is a one woman A Cappella mix of Disney songs. I love it!!!

This girl just amazes me. Her drive and ambition are clearly evident from the quality of her videos. You can tell she puts a lot of time into these! I am amazed at how well she does everything!! Singing, costumes, makeup, arrangement, editing, this girl is way multi-talented! I find her very inspirational because she's just a girl in high school who took it upon herself to make her dreams come true. I think what I love most about this video is in the comments - she thanks Nick Pitera, another famous YouTube musician and she says that he inspired her. I think it's apparent that she is also inspiring other people, her latest video has received over 130,000 hits in one week. Her videos keep getting better and better and she quickly rose from obscurity to internet fandom. People inspiring people, that's what it's all about!

Brazilian Tour Groups

vinylmation brazilIf you have visited Walt Disney World in the months of December - March or June - August, chances are you have seen a Brazilian Tour Group or "turistas". You will know these groups by their neon colored clothing, fanny packs, and single adult escort carrying a flag attempting to herd about 20 teenagers. These groups can be loud and obnoxious with their chanting and they have to be first in line for everything whether you were there first or not. They will get right in front of you. They will also leave one person to stand in line and then 10 - 20 more come to butt in front of you right when you are about to get on the ride. This also holds true for fastpass kiosks, parades, shows, and fireworks.

About Brazil

I do not blame the nation of Brazil for these groups. Brazil is a beautiful nation and I hope to visit there someday. There has been a lot of economic reform in Brazil over the past few years and it is one of the world's fastest growing economies. Brazil has historical ties with the Portuguese empire, so the culture in Brazil is mainly Portuguese. Approximately 75% of Brazil's population is Roman Catholic. Interestingly enough, their motto is "Ordem e Progresso" which means Order and Progress.

Mob Mentality

I think the problem is the mob mentality these kids get into when they are in a huge group. Not to mention the fact that Walt Disney World and other theme parks in the Orlando area are overwhelmingly stimulating. However, I am at a loss for words when I hear stories about these groups like the following:

  • Defecated in the Muppet Vision 3D Theater

  • Stole a Cast Member ID, attempted to use it and were arrested

  • Publicly groping each other AND innocent bystanders

  • Attempted to enter in the back of the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular theater

The majority of the stories are not this bad but they are generally loud, rude, and annoying.

At Hollywood Studios this past January, we were sitting on the sidewalk waiting for the new parade to kick off. A Brazilian Tour Group walked by and took up the entire width of Hollywood Blvd on the street, and they didn’t break up their group for anyone else to walk past. I felt so bad for the people walking in the opposite direction.

In that same group from above, I have no idea where the chaperones were but there was a lot of inappropriate touching going on while they were walking. I mean come on no one wants to see that, this is a family park.

- Jessica Furtado

Prepare Yourself

Disney has started to talk to these groups about appropriate behavior before they begin their vacation. This started recently, so time will tell if it makes an impact. In the meantime, just try to avoid them as best you can. When they are moving in one direction, go the other way. The best thing to do is get to the parks when they open to avoid these groups. But, sometimes even with all your planning you might still run into them. If they are really bothering you, talk to a Cast Member. If you do talk to a Cast Member, be sure to also write to Guest Relations about the experience afterwards. If that still isn't enough for you, try learning Portugese :)
One of my biggest pet peeves about them happens to be when they play the “I don’t speak English” card. Whether it be a CM or a guest asking them to politely move, they usually tell them, “I don’t speak English” in Portuguese, but then happily go and speak to their friend next to them in English. Just to avoid either moving or getting in trouble.

- Jessica Furtado

I have experienced this too and it really upsets me. It is unbelievably rude and inconsiderate. This has everything to do with the person, not the country or culture that they come from. I have had experiences with these tour groups that weren't too bad and I have also had very pleasant experiences with smaller groups of Brazilians.

 Looking to the Future

There have been rumors for a long time about adding a Brazil pavilion to EPCOT's World Showcase. Whether this happens  or not, I do not believe these tour groups will ever go away. They generate key revenue for Florida tourism. Hopefully with a little planning, they will not impact your Walt Disney World vacation.

Disney Fairytale Wedding & Honeymoon Day 7: New Friends at Food & Wine

For some reason, we were still awake after being up since 3AM and taking bridal portraits for 3 hours. We changed and tried to go to EPCOT but after waiting for over 30 mins the bus never came. Apparently there had been an accident at Saratoga Springs and we ended up taking the bus to the Magic Kingdom and then hopped a monorail to EPCOT. The whole trip took almost 2 hrs. Ridiculous!

When we arrived at EPCOT, we hightailed it over to the Food & Wine Festival! This was the first time at Food & Wine for both of us and we LOVED it! We started with Australia and then Brazil. A guest in line told us that we could get passports at the festival center so we went there and got our free passports! I highly suggest this for anyone at Food & Wine because the menus aren't always visibly accessible from the line. After that we got dessert, champagne, and beer while we were at it! Too bad I didn't take any pictures, everything was amazing! Oh well there's always next year!

I had been tweeting with people all morning about meeting up and my WDW Magic forum friend, Jess, was on her way to EPCOT for Food & Wine too. We waited for her and her Mom, Diana, by the benches across from the Desserts & Champagne kiosk. I love connecting with other Disney fans and I was so excited to meet Jess because she had followed my entire Wedding Planning Journal on WDW Magic.com. I couldn't wait to tell her all about the wedding! It was so lovely to meet them! We definitely made new friends for life :)

jess and diana

We parted ways with our new friends and made plans to meet up later in our trip. Jason and I headed over to where we left off on the Mexico side of the World Showcase. Our next kiosk was Argentina! This was my #1 favorite, but I don't know if that's saying much since we hit less than half of the kiosks on our trip. I really need an entire month to sample everything. I get full (and drunk) too quickly!

We had the Beef Empanda (my favorite!!) and the Grilled Beef Skewer with Chimichurri Sauce and Boniato Puree

argentina food and wine

MMMMMM FOOD PORN!!!!!!

It was really hot and sunny that day and for some reason I decided not to wear sunscreen. NOT a good idea. Since I didn't want to pay a 500% markup on sunscreen, we went to find some shade by the old Odyssey building. Another WDW Magic friend and Disney Castmember, Karen, texted me to meet up. She is also a future Disney Bride! It was great meeting her too! I am so happy that I got to meet my online friends! It really added more magic to our trip :)

disney karen

Jason and I still weren't tired so we continued having fun at Food & Wine. We hung out for a bit in Mexico and found more shade. Mexico had really good food at the kiosk and I'm sad I wasn't more hungry. Jason ate most of the food!

Super yummy shrimp tacos, the sauce really complimented it well

food and wine mexico shrimp taco

The beef taco and margarita were also great! I think it's funny how the food is small portions but they give you a regular sized alcoholic beverage. We definitely saw people staggering around ;)

food and wine epcot mexico

Jason got a reprieve from wearing his Groom ears because he wanted to wear his awesome Indiana Jones hat!

jason indiana jones food and wine

By the middle of the afternoon, we were both pretty zonked and needed naps. We got fastpasses for Soarin and then left for much needed naps.

When we got back to the resort we had to find an ATM (Food & Wine is a bit pricey...) and I took some pictures around the lobby of the different Disney horses. I LOVE horses and I can't believe I had missed these when we checked in!

horses saratoga springs
horses saratoga springs

When we got back to the room, this was on our bed! What a nice surprise!

bride groom towel

After our nap, we went back to EPCOT in time to ride Soarin and went to watch Illuminations in France so we could enjoy some grey goose lemon slushes :) After Illuminations, we chatted up a group of girls who were in the Disney College Program. We got to talking about the wedding and one girl, Dawn, wanted to add me on Facebook!! Ah, I love technology. I added her right from my phone. 15 years ago we would have had to exchange phone numbers and/or addresses. It was just more difficult to keep in touch back then! It was a wonderful end to a magical day!

Oh boy WDW's 40th Anniversary is up next!

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today's quote comes to us from one of my favorite attractions, The Carousel of Progress!

carousel of progress"There's a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day"

- Theme Song, Carousel of Progress

This quote popped into my head the other day because my 8 year old niece said she was singing it in the bath! I love that this song has touched so many generations and I hope it continues on. This song always brings a smile to my face even when I'm having a bad day. I try to stay positive and hope that after a bad day, the next day will be better. Come on sing it with me! There's a great big beautiful tomorrow, just a dream away!

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today: Dreams

The Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Tip For Today is a series of short inspirational stories, assignments, or quotes that I hope will inspire you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be every single day.

Today's quote comes to us from my #1 favorite princess, Aurora!

briar rose sleeping beauty disney"They say if you dream a thing more than once, it's sure to come true."

- Aurora, Sleeping Beauty

Well I've dreamed for a million dollars more than once but I haven't seen it yet! I'm kidding, of course, but this quote can be easily taken out of context. It's more about believing in something than luck. When you have something to believe in, it makes life much easier to bear. That is what dreams are all about :)
