A good friend of mine recently shared a story with me about some bad manners they encountered while waiting in line for a character greeting in Walt Disney World.
It was a busy day and the line was long. It was full of people of all ages and one parent took offense to the fact that there were so many childless adults in line. They were so bothered by this that they complained to the cast member in charge about it and requested to cut the line. The cast member handled it well and told the parent that character greetings are for all guests, not just children.
I think that sometimes parents become overwhelmed by their children in Walt Disney World. Children are on full sensory overload plus all the walking and excitement tends to exhaust them and can lead to a melt down. However, the Disney Parks are for everybody, not just children. I think many adults love Walt Disney World because it is a place where they can reconnect with their inner child.
I know that it is incredibly difficult to keep a child entertained, especially waiting in line. I am very glad to see the emergence of the interactive queues for the more popular rides and I would love to see them implement this idea in lines for shows and character greetings as well. But in the meantime, we must all wait in line together, children and adults alike. I think that if we begin giving our children “special treatment” such as cutting lines, they are going to learn this behavior and expect special treatment all the time. I’m glad the cast member in this situation handled it so well, kudos to them!
