Cleaning House

The first order of business for us after we decided to relocate was to find out what to do with all our stuff. We had no idea what we were going to do and more importantly, how expensive it would be. Keep in mind we just paid for our Disney Fairytale Wedding less than a year ago.

I poured over all of the posts on TheRelocatedTourist and read about how they sold everything and moved with the bear necessities, the simple bear necessities... We decided this would be a good thing for us to do since the furniture we have is old anyway. It's all my furniture and I think it would be nice for Jason and I to buy new stuff that's more to both our liking now. I may have loved my white wicker bedroom set when I was 11 but now it's an eyesore!

So what do we donate and what do we sell? I sold my car on Craigslist last year and it was totally sketchy. I really didn't want to go that route again. I'm not a salesperson and I don't like to negotiate (unless it's my salary hehe). So I started looking into donating to charity. This was a better route for us because we itemize our taxes and could deduct our donations. Ah I learned so much from Scrooge McDuck! Keep in mind, donating takes a lot of time because you need to catalog everything. I packed up 10 boxes today and cataloged over 100 items! That's why I'm doing this in stages. I started in December 2011, 4 months before our move. At this point, we have cleaned out the major stuff but there's still a lot more to do.

I did some research on the value of items and found that the best items to donate are clothing and housewares. Electronics are very much depreciated so I'm selling our electronics on EBay. I found a list of item value and compared the tax donation value with the market value to decide what to sell and what to donate.

My sister suggested that we donate to Purple Heart. I went to their website and read what they do and do not accept. They don't take any furniture but they take almost everything else. I made an appointment for a pickup right away. I received an email confirmation, put everything outside on my porch, and they came to pick it up right on time. I didn't even have to talk to anyone. They even left a tax form. So far we have scheduled 3 Purple Heart pickups, 2 of which were in 2011 and I already included them in our taxes. I kept a list of everything I donated, plugged it into TurboTax, and it automagically calculated the deduction.

We are donating our furniture to the American Vets (AMVETS). Their process is a bit different from Purple Heart. They call to confirm pickup instead of email. Get with the times people! You cannot donate anything broken. All of our furniture is really old and scratched or chipped but luckily nothing is broken. I have scheduled 1 pickup with them so far and they also left a tax form. Easy peasy!

We are not able to sell or donate everything. We are keeping our TV, mattresses, and many boxes of items we cannot part with. Stay tuned for my next article on movers, truck rentals, and moving pods!

Everyone has different relocation needs and this is what works for us with our busy schedules. I hope you find this information helpful :)

WDW Wedding Planning & Star Wars Weekends 5.2011 Day 5: Wedding Pavilion Walkthrough

Our last day. BooHoo!!! We got up at 6AM, got ready and checked out. Jason’s boarding passes were hanging on the door but mine were not. We got it straightened out at the airline check in desk so it turned out ok. There was no line to boot!

We decided to just take a cab to Grand Floridian since it was already 8AM and I wanted to make sure to get to the Wedding Pavilion early for pictures. There were cabs hanging out in the parking lot near the custom house so we grabbed one and were on our way!

We walked over to the WP and took some pictures. I cried! It’s so beautiful!

Then we checked out the Groom’s Room:

One last peek!

The Bride's Vestibule was locked but there was a maid there and she opened it for us. She was so sweet and was genuinely happy for us.

It was still about an hour before our meeting so we went for round 2 @ Gasparilla. This time the food was hot and delicious. Yeah!

My wedding folder. I *think* I bought this in the mid 90’s.

We walked back to Franck's and met with our wedding planner. I am SO glad we did this. She made wonderful suggestions for everything and worked with us to keep the cost down. We put every option that we could think of in our BEO and she will update the costs and send us a revised BEO. I had to hug her!

Sorry but this is the only shot I have of Franck’s. We only had a half hour in there and I had a ton of stuff to go over. I totally forgot to take pictures inside!

Since it was our last day, we hopped a monorail to EPCOT. The EPCOT monorail was down so we had to take a bus from the TTC. We had a nice conversation with a lady and son who liked my nerds rock bag :)

We decided to take it easy and just eat and drink our way around World Showcase. But we had to get fast passes for Soarin at least. First we got a blue raspberry slush @ the cart near Journey Into Imagination and we went to UK Lochside to sit and relax. I Can’t wait for the Dessert Party! I shot a short video of this location.

We made our way to France for another round of lemon slushes and I got a strawberry crepe. Nom nom nom nom!

After that we walked to Japan and got a Kirin and some california rolls. Nom nom nom nom! We sat for a long time near our favorite waterfall @ Yakitori house and watched the ducks. It appears that the duck couple we've seen over our past few trips had 5 babies! They were all over everyone begging for food. It was hilarious!

I was pretty tipsy by then and we tried to watch the drum show but I either needed to be sitting or walking. Standing in the heat made me feel like barfing. So we walked to America and just sat at the tables outside in the shade. It was a really nice spot with a cool breeze that was welcome for us.

It was getting close to our fast passes for Soarin so we made our way back to future world. I stopped in Mouse Gear and got candy for my nieces and shortbread for Mom. The cashier complimented me on my hat. The cashier next to her was helping a little girl and he did a magic trick for her. It was truly magical to see the look on her face! Only in Disney!

We took a ride on Soarin but we got the bottom row. Oh well, it was still a great ride as always.

That wraps up another great trip full of magical memories that will last a lifetime. The highlight for me was definitely the Wedding Pavilion and our meetings with RevKev and our wedding planner. I think for Jason the highlight was Inside The Saga with Anthony Daniels. I just asked him what his favorite memory was and he said he couldn’t decide. Now that's a magical vacation!

When we landed in Baltimore, Jason said something that is so true:

“We’re home. Or we’re where we live. We just left home.”

It’s always sad to leave WDW but at least we’ll be back in just 4 months for our Disney Fairytale Wedding and Honeymoon!

WDW Wedding Planning & Star Wars Weekends 5.2011 Day 4: Our First Animal Kingdom Rope Drop!

We got up early so we could catch rope drop @ Animal Kingdom. We actually took a cab because we didn’t think the busses ran that early but we were wrong. Oh well now we know for next time! The CBR has a sign that says busses run 30 minutes before the park opens but we saw a bus for Hollywood Studios @7AM and it wasn’t scheduled to open until 8.

We made it to our very first rope drop! What a cute show and we were front and center! I got some cute pics.

We made our way to the safari which was the best safari I’ve ever been on. We def need to get a DSLR for the wedding trip.

In all my rides on KS I have never seen the lion do anything but sleep. This was our first early morning safari and the driver got all excited and told us to be quiet and then the lion started roaring! It was SO cool! Then he sort of started cooing like he was talking to us just like my house cat does! I really wish I had taken video of this instead.

Then the lion without any warning stood still for a second and then flopped back down. It reminded me of the scene in The Lion King where Scar flops down while he’s talking to Simba.

We took a quiet stroll through Pangini Forest Trail and got some cute pictures:

I think I take this same picture every trip but I love it!

I took a bunch of gorilla pictures but this was my favorite with him scratching his head!

star wars weekends 2011

After that we grabbed fast passes for Expedition Everest and had an awesome breakfast at Pizzafari. It was the best Quick Service breakfast I’ve had on property on the last few trips.

star wars weekends 2011

I made me a sammich!

star wars weekends 2011

Then we caught a show of Festival of The Lion King, rode Expedition Everest and went back to the room for a nap.

Bye bye Animal Kingdom! We only had a few hours to spend here but we’re glad we stopped by.

star wars weekends 2011

The Magical Express tag was on our door when we got back :( That’s the saddest sight but at least we'll be back in just 4 short months for our wedding!

star wars weekends 2011

We napped and got up around 2PM. I packed a bit and we made our way to Hollywood Studios. First we went to Jabba's hut to buy some souvenirs. And we made our way to the Indiana Jones Merch so Jason could buy his coveted hat!

star wars weekends 2011

Then we made our way to The Premier Theater for Inside The Saga starring Anthony Daniels. This was one of the best highlights of our trip. He talked for a half hour about his experiences as C3PO and it was very touching to see him thank and then hug C3PO. I nearly cried! It was an amazing show.

Then we made our way to Starring Roles Cafe where i had my very first Butterfinger Cupcake! Omg nom nom nom nom. 4 noms!

We shopped for presents for everyone and sat to have a beer for a bit before hyperspace hoopla. People of course were rude and had kids on their shoulders so I could barely see :( I did catch the part with chewy dancing to welcome to the jungle though! It was hilarious! At least we had awesome seats for Anthony Daniels. I added all of Hyperspace Hoopla to my Star Wars Weekends 2011 YouTube Playlist

We left Hollywood Studios and wanted to go to the Magic Kingdom for Extra Magic Hours. The bus to the Magic Kingdom was mobbed and I was wondering how to get there when Jason said “How about we just take the bus to the Contemporary and walk?” I could not have loved him more in that moment! He’s a TOTAL Disney pro now :) So we took the almost empty bus to the Contemporary and walked to the Magic Kingdom. We dreamed about buying DVC at Bay Lake Towers….mmmmm. The park was open till 3AM that night but we had to get up @6AM to check out and get over to Franck’s for our meeting with our wedding planner.

We got there as the Main Street Electrical Parade was starting.

star wars weekends 2011

I was starving (a butterfinger cupcake is not dinner!) so we headed over to Cosmic Rays and got a sweet spot outside for The Magic The Memories & You and Wishes. We both had burgers and it was delicious! We watched MMY without a hitch and watching it from the side was great. The projections wrap all the way around the castle and we noticed that what looks like confetti is actually hundreds of pictures!

star wars weekends 2011

When Wishes was about to start this incredibly rude British family totally jacked our spot. Their kids were almost in my friggin lap. I actually had to move. They were touching our chairs and table. It was ridiculous. Luckily you couldn’t hear the audio very well from there because of the waterfall and the fireworks were mainly blocked by trees so they left after Tinkerbell flew by. I don’t know why things like that surprise me. I’m glad that so far we've always met more nice people than rude people and I will be very sad if that balance ever changes for the worse.

We rode Carousel of Progress and the PeopleMover and made our way to Frontierland with intentions of riding Big Thunder Mountain but we never did. Jason stopped at the shooting gallery and we ended up watching Main Street Electrical Parade with a pretty good view.

I was feeling sick because I inhaled the burger and I needed to go back to the room. Jason was disappointed because he really wanted to ride Splash Mountain on this trip. We didn’t do any thrill rides except Expedition Everest :( This trip was too short!

On our way out we walked through the shops, take a gander at this little beauty priced at $37,500!

star wars weekends 2011

Bye Bye Magic Kingdom! We’ll be back soon!
